WHAT IS ASSISTED LIVING?
Assisted living facilities are for people needing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs - bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, transferring) but wishing to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Residents in assisted living centers are not able to live by themselves but do not require constant care either. Most assisted living facilities create a service plan for each individual resident upon admission. The service plan details the personalized services required by the resident and guaranteed by the facility. The plan is updated regularly to assure that the resident receives the appropriate care as his or her condition changes.
In Kentucky, assisted living communities provide each resident with a separate living unit that includes a lockable door and private bathroom. He or she can also receive assistance with activities of daily living. Meals, housekeeping, transportation, laundry and clerical services are also available.
Although assisted living communities provide support with activities of daily living. They should not be confused with nursing homes and the services they provide. We provide assistance with self-administration of medication. This doesn't mean that a relatively independent senior with a medical condition cannot live in an assisted living community. Services to care for the medical condition would have to be administered by an outside agency, at the discretion of the resident and his/her family.
Kentucky's laws and regulation governing assisted living communities ensure each client lives independently in a safe environment that promotes individual choice and personal dignity. In Kentucky, the Department of Aging and Independent Living determines through certification review if an assisted living community meets all of Kentucky's requirements. Under law, both the resident and the assisted living community have rights, responsibilities and protections.
